Joseph Chapman built the mortuary
chapel and superintendent's cottage, as
well as the grand gates, railing and
piers and walled the plot all around to
create the cemetery.
A price list dated 1852 quotes that the
price for a walled (brick lined) grave,
already dug and sixteen feet deep,
would be five guineas. These were
family vaults, so there could be two or
three burials on the same plot, one
above another.
